What Is Hood Bass? San Diego DJ HuntHux on Blending Hip-Hop and Bass Music
By info · · 2 min read

San Diego runs on house music. Walk into most venues on a Saturday and that's what you'll hear. But underneath, a bass and hip-hop scene has been growing — powered by collectives, not solo acts. One of them is Boogie Mob, founded by DJ and producer HuntHux.
From the Outer Banks to San Diego Hux grew up surfing and fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After college he applied to about 40 entry-level jobs across five West Coast cities and landed one in Del Mar. He'd never set foot in California. He drove out anyway and, in his words, put roots down in "the dank of the dank." The ocean is still his reset outside the studio. Every wave breaks differently, and that constant change is what keeps him curious — about surfing and about sound. How Boogie Mob started In 2018 Hux was making music alone in North County with almost nobody to share it with. A late-night party introduced him to Shane, who promised to connect him with the scene. A week later, at a TroyBoi show, Hux pitched the idea: start a collective and throw bass events. Shane brought in Nikki, and the name Boogie Mob clicked on the spot. Their first show was at Avenue in Pacific Beach. The owner admitted he wasn't into bass music but gave them a shot. They booked local talent, partnered with a clothing brand for merch, and packed the place with a line out the door. Milestones since • A sold-out first event at Revel, a venue the crew still calls home • Hosting Charles the First at Music Box with Jesse Rizzuto of What's The Move — the late producer's first-ever San Diego show • A Boogie Mob logo Hux says came to him in a dream; he woke up and drew it immediately Why collectives win Hux's take on San Diego: plenty of talent, plenty of one-hit moments, but no one has held the crown for long. Collectives change that. Boogie Mob, Umbrella Friends, Bass Indicate and others overlap constantly. Artists play each other's shows, vend at each other's events, and level each other up instead of stepping on toes. That's the same model WHOA is built on. Our Music Collective connects DJs, producers, MCs and bands with events, retail pop-ups and the WHOA community — from Ocean Beach to festivals across SoCal.
